Optibus Gets Bid to Supply Software for Rio de Janeiro’s Transportation System

The achievement of the historic milestone of bringing its operations to 1,000 cities around the world has not stopped Optibus from continuing to lead the way in mobility and transportation efficiency solutions on a global scale.

The company was selected to supply the planning and scheduling software for the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, the country’s second largest city.

Due to its technical and commercial capabilities, the public transport operator “Mobi Rio” chose Optibus through a bidding process that involved prestigious local and international companies.

Scope

Optibus‘ comprehensive software platform will help improve services for the system’s 255,000 daily passengers and optimize the efficiency of the entire network, which currently covers more than 120 kilometers, 125 stations and 8 terminals.

Optibus provides a cloud-native solution for public transport planning and operations, powered by artificial intelligence and optimization algorithms.

In line with Mobi Rio‘s ambitious expansion and improvement plans for Rio de Janeiro’s BRT, Optibus enables users of its platform to predict the fulfillment of each trip, leading to better services and passenger experience, and become more agile in adapting plans, including for large and special events, that will support the complex operation of Rio’s BRT.

Future Plans

Mobi Rio took over management of Rio’s BRT in February 2022 and is tasked with overseeing the network at a time of transformation and growth.

78 bus stations have been renovated or remodeled since last year. Also under construction is the TransBrasil corridor that will expand network coverage by an additional 32 kilometers.

The BRT vehicle fleet is expected to increase exponentially with Mobi-Rio’s plans to add 291 new vehicles to the network by March 2023.

The city council is looking to further expand the fleet by incorporating an additional 270 buses by February 2024 , according to estimates and targets put forward by Optibus.
