Porsche Develops Strategy to Lead the Electric Bicycle Market

Porsche’s electric mobility strategy is not only limited to the manufacture of cars, but also includes the world of micro-mobility by setting up specific companies to develop this type of vehicles.

These are two joint ventures with the Dutch company Ponooc Investment B.V., whose creation came into effect on August 1 of this year. Porsche eBike Performance GmbH will be responsible for electric drive systems for two-wheeled vehicles.

Structure Design

The platform devised by Porsche for the bicycles comprises motors, batteries and the software architecture required for connectivity solutions.

The other joint venture, P2 eBike GmbH – powered by Porsche, based in Stuttgart, Germany, will use these drive systems for a new generation of Porsche electric bicycles starting in the middle of this decade.

It should be noted that in addition to compact drive systems, Porsche eBike Performance GmbH will develop and produce especially powerful structures under its flagship brand. In the future, both product categories will be supplied to eBike manufacturers around the world, for whom the newly formed joint venture will be a technology partner.

A Top Team

To solidify its foray into the eBike market, Porsche appointed highly skilled managers. In this regard, Jan Becker, formerly Managing Director of Porsche Lifestyle GmbH & Co. KG, assumes the position of Chairman of the Management Board of Porsche eBike Performance GmbH.  Meanwhile, at P2 eBike GmbH, that function will be performed by Moritz Failenschmid, also Managing Director of Focus Bikes.

According to Porsche AG Vice President and Member of the Board of Management Lutz Meschke, the company sees great potential in the e-bike segment, which is why they are constantly expanding their activities in this area.

“Jan Becker and Moritz Failenschmid are recognized experts when it comes to establishing and developing forward-looking, customer-oriented companies. Within a highly qualified and motivated team, they will demonstrate this in the two joint ventures. As is characteristic of Porsche, it is about developing products that inspire people through intelligent design, sophisticated technology and exceptional performance,” he said.
